General Volunteers: MLK Jr. Day of Service 2018
THE DREAM’S ALIVE - DREAMERS RISE
This year we'll be helping out Lincoln High, a landmark in Los Angeles' own history of Civil Rights Activism. The movement that Dr. King sparked to bring greater equality to America and to ensure civil rights for all people regardless of race, found a voice in LA in 1968 when near 5000 students from Wilson, Garfield, Roosevelt, Belmont, and Lincoln High spearheaded a movement to stop discrimination against Mexican-American youth in public schools. This upcoming January, we will commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King and honor the 50th anniversary of the East LA walkouts by restoring and beautifying Lincoln High, an institution serving some of the most vulnerable beneficiaries of the DREAM Act, in hopes that our contribution will dignify a space in which all Americans are seen as equals.
Volunteer Project: Research has shown that children learn better in an environment in which they feel proud and comfortable, volunteers will transform the campus by painting murals, painting school buildings, and rehabilitating and expanding the gardens. Volunteers will put their constructions skills to work with building benches, planters, and creating an outdoor classroom. School gardens and urban gardening have an impact on science, math, social studies and language and visual arts. In addition, the students have the benefit of learning teamwork and responsibility by caring for the garden. The students will also see first hand the wonders of fresh food, healthy nutrition, and benefits of exercise.
